Topic: Assessment of learning outcomes for undergraduate majors

Title:  Why Student Learning Outcomes Focus Assessment, Pedagogy, and Curriculum?  A Scholarly Response

Dr. Amy Driscoll, Consulting Scholar at Carnegie, Senior Scholar, Portland State University

Student Learning Outcomes have become prominent and required for academic programs in higher education as a focus for assessment.

Related to their use, pedagogy and curriculum are currently being aligned with those outcomes to create coherent and effective courses, programs, and degree requirements.  Some of the resistance to these expectations has taken the form of a silent "why?" on the part of faculty.  Recent research has begun to respond to the question and to provide support and guidance for the practices associated with student learning outcomes.  An overview of national priorities and research supported practices will be described.

The later wrap-up session will address the issues of faculty resistance,  accreditation, programmatic changes, analysis of student work, use of rubrics, institutional impact, etc. in an interactive format.
